Adeline Hlavka Obituary

Adeline Elaine Hlavka, age 94 of Silver Lake, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2024 at Harmony River Living Center in Hutchinson surrounded by her family.

Mass of Christian Burial for Adeline Elaine Hlavka, 94, of Silver Lake, will be celebrated on Monday January 22,2024 at 11:00 am at Holy Family Catholic Church in Silver Lake.   Readings done by granddaughters Kristin Hlavka and Tracy Hesebeck. Gift bearers were her children Bill, Kathy, and Sue.

Visitation will be held Sunday, January 21, 2024 from 4-7 PM at Maresh Funeral Home in Silver Lake.  CCW Rosary at 6 PM and Parish Prayers at 6:30 PM.  Further visitation at the funeral home on Monday from 9:30 – 10:30 AM.

Pallbearers are her grandsons, Chris and Justin Hlavka, Matt Nowak, great-grandsons Andrew, Isaac and Erik Hesebeck, and Braden Wigern and nephew Brad Paulson. Other grandchildren are honorary pallbearers. Burial will be in the Holy Family Catholic Cemetery in Silver Lake.

Adeline was born on November 22, 1929 in Delmont, South Dakota to Benjamin and Mabel (Dvorak) Hoffman. She was baptized at the Zion Lutheran Church in Delmont, SD in December, 1929, confirmed at the same church, graduated from eighth grade. She moved with her family from Delmont to Stewart, MN in November 1942

On August 26, 1952 Adeline was united in Holy Matrimony to William Joseph Hlavka at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Silver Lake. They lived on Jersey Hill Farm, which was in the Hlavka family since 1877. They were blessed with five children and were married for 37 years

Adeline loved to crochet, sew, bake, play bingo, danced to old time music, gardened, and canned all garden produce. She was a strong independent woman with many quick quips and stories that made many laugh. In her later years she loved to do adult coloring, putting puzzles together and reading

Adeline was a life-time member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the Council of Catholic Women. Adeline is also a member of the American Legion’s Ladies Auxiliary.

Adeline worked at the Silver Lake Produce, Hands in Hutchinson, Berks in Dassel, and Tonka Toys for 22 years.

Survivors include her children, William (Diane) Hlavka of Silver Lake, Kathryn Nowak of Hutchinson, and Susan (Chuck) Smykalski of Silver Lake; 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; brother Vernon (Marcella) Hoffman of Phoenix, Arizona, and sister Nora Vollroth of Silver Lake. She is also survived by many other relatives and friends.

Preceding her in death were her husband William Hlavka, on February 14, 1989; son Michael Hlavka on September 25, 1988; son Frank on May 20 ,2014, parents Benjamin and Mabel Hoffman; parents in law Joseph and Rose Hlavka, son-in-law Lawrence Nowak on November 3, 2002; daughter in law Therese Hlavka on January 16, 2019 ,brother Benjamin Hoffman Jr., sister Ramona Wosmek, brothers-in-law John Schultz, Otto Wosmek, Joseph Hlavka, and George Cullen; sisters-in-law Sister Rosalyn Hlavka, Adelaide Cullen, Mary Hoffman and Elaine Hlavka.

In lieu of plants, memorials preferred.
