Helen Mae Piehl, age 88, of Silver Lake passed away on Sunday, January 31, 2016 at The United Hospital in St. Paul.
She was born on March 16, 1927 in Hutchinson the daughter of William (Bill) & Victoria (Byczynski) Pofahl.
Helen graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1945 and continued her education with a one year course in Elementary education. From there Helen took evening classes at Mankato State and got her B.S. Degree in 1967.
Helen taught at various country schools from 1946 through 1960. She continued her teaching career at Lester Prairie as an Elementary teacher and later the librarian for twenty-six years.
On September 30th, 1948, Helen M. Pofahl and Ralph E. Piehl were joined in holy marriage at Westlynn Lutheran Church. God blessed their marriage with two sons Gary and Gene.
After a year in Stewart, they moved to Silver Lake and resided at the same address ever since.
Helen loved tending to her flowers and gardening.
She was a faithful member of Grace Bible Church in Silver Lake. Helen also was a member of Silver Lake American Legion Post Auxiliary #141, The Hutchinson Historical Museum and Retired Teacher’s Alumni. She was very active in Grace Bible Church of Silver Lake and cherished their fellowship. Helen belonged to The Ladies Aid too.
Survived by sons: Gary Piehl of Cokato and Gene (Nancy) Piehl of Silver Lake; three grandchildren: Heidi Salisbury, Mike (Heather) Piehl and Janae (Jarrod) Witte; three great grandchildren: Emma Salisbury, Caleb and Liam Piehl; a brother: Bob Pofahl of; sisters: Alma Johnson and Sandra (Dave) Frauenshuh; a sister-in-law: Myra Bushard; a brother-in-law: Gerald Piehl; other relatives and friends.
Preceded in death by her husband Ralph Piehl, a great grandson Kaydin Salisbury, her parents, a sister Betty Pulkrabek, a brother William Pofahl Jr. and half-sisters Irene Painschab and Eleanor Hagen.
Funeral services for Helen Piehl will be held on Friday, February 5th, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at Grace Bible Church in Silver Lake. Dr. Tom Rakow will officiate.
Interment will follow at Grace Bible Cemetery.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, February 4th from 4-8 P.M. at The Maresh Funeral Home in Silver Lake. A Prayer Service will be held at 7:30 P.M. Further visitation will be held on Friday, February 5th at the church one hour prior to services.
Casket Bearers will be Jarrod Witte, Ron Johnson, Mark Hanke, Alan Piehl, Matt Frauenshuh and Steve Pulkrabek.
