Valencia Ann "Val" Shamla Obituary
Valencia Ann "Val” Shamla, age 91, of Silver Lake, MN passed away at her home on Wednesday, July 1, 2026. She was born on February 14, 1935 in Glencoe, the daughter of Frank and Emma (Zaruba) Penas. Val attended St Joseph Catholic school through 8th grade, and graduated from Silver Lake High School in 1952. On October 19, 1954, she married Robert “Bob” Shamla at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Silver Lake. God blessed their marriage with six children. In 1965, Bob and Val built their dream home near Swan Lake where she lived for the rest of her life. They raised their family and spent time in the yard and garden growing fresh vegetables. She was an excellent cook and baker and made the best kolaches, cinnamon rolls, doughnuts and bread. No one could match her Thanksgiving dressing! She was an accomplished seamstress, creating many outfits for her children. Val was very strong in her faith and love of God. She was a lifelong member of the St Joseph and Holy Family Church and the Rosary Society and CCW. She played the church organ for many years and was among the founding members of the St Joseph Adult Choir, of which she was very proud. Her love of music was evident as she hummed along with songs she knew and played the piano by ear. She went to all the kids’ concerts she could. Val was also a strong sports fan and loved watching her kids and grandkids play. She followed the Gophers women’s basketball and MN Lynx faithfully. Football games were on all season. Val loved visiting with her extended family and spending time with her 17 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Survived by her loving children: Lori (Frank) Kaczmarek, Lynne (Mark) Garbers, Julie (Randy) Vasek, Bruce (Nancy) Shamla, Joni (Dave Humlicek) Shamla, and Brad (Lauri) Shamla; grandchildren: Chad Kaczmarek, Lindsey (Randy) Peck, Megan (Cody) Smith, Jason (Joslin) Thiemann, Kelli (Aaron) Lueders, Kris (Ryan) Alsleben, Andy Vasek, Alissa (Trevor) Carlson, Beau (Mariah) Vasek, Jake Vasek, Tim (Lori) Eischens, Steph (Josh) Schultz, Blake Shamla, Peder Shamla, Kyle Humlicek, John (MaKayla) Shamla, Hope Shamla; twenty-four great-grandchildren; siblings Elaine Hemerick and Ron Penas, in-laws Judy Penas, Betty (Len) Stifter, Gerald Shamla, Wayne (Janet) Shamla, Judi Hall and Doug Shamla; many other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by her husband, Bob, her parents and parents-in-law, brother LeRoy Penas, son-in-law Rick Thiemann, in-laws Jean Penas, Jerome Hemerick, Barb Shamla, Florence Sheesley, twin infant grandsons, and twin infant great-granddaughters.
